Art of the Game

 

This book is a result of a shared passion for handmade game boards between 2 people.  We first met Selby Shaver and his wife, Debra, while exhibiting at a market outside Chicago in the 1990's.  The connection was virtually instant and the stage was set for what ultimately became the first book to be published on the subject of early American game boards since the 1980's.  Art of the Game is a full color coffee table-sized book featuring over 170 different examples along with descriptions of each piece and information when available.  From its inception the intent of this book has been to allow the reader to view this wonderful form of folk art from the simplest to the most sophisticated.  The appeal of game boards is as strong today as ever.  Art of the Game not only showcases a wonderful collection, it continues to inspire collectors today from the most advanced to those who've only begun to "play".
